Primo Levi. El testimoni, l’escriptor, el científic - El Born CCM

Primo Levi’s character is complex: a chemist, witness, poet, anthropologist, ethnologist (although as an amateur), linguist … he was a man who was curious about anything and anyone. To explain who he was, the image of the polyhedron can be used, a shape with many faces but, at the same time, when just one of these faces is illuminated the others are immediately hidden, in the shadow. At this conference we will find out some of the most outstanding moments of Primo Levi’s life as an author and as a man.

Marco Belpoliti is a writer, teacher at the University of Bergamo (Italy) and responsible for editing the complete works of Primo Levi.

Primo Levi. El testimoni, l’escriptor, el científic - El Born CCM

Fina Birulés is a philosophy teacher at the University of Barcelona and a researcher at ADHUC – Research Centre for Theory, Gender and Sexuality and she will talk about Levi’s contribution to the notion of the “human condition” in relation to that published by Hannah Arendt.

Josep Maria Esquirol is a philosophy teacher at Barcelona University, and he will talk about the relationship between memory, understanding and meaning.

Simona Skrabec is a writer, translator, and doctor of comparative literature. He chairs the International Translation and Linguistic Rights Committee of PEN International.

David Galcera, philosophy teacher, moderates the discussion.

We follow the writer’s journey in his attempts to make a link between the search for ever-new aspects of the Lager (the German word used by Jewish prisoners to describe Auschwitz and the dehumanisation they suffered there), through dialogue held with the various types of audiences.

Fabio Levi is president of the Centro Internazionale Di Studi Primo Levi, Professor of Contemporary History, University of Turin.

Enric Berenguer is a writer and psychoanalyst, and he will present reflections on how the notion of guilt and shame allows a dialogue to be opened between psychoanalysis, testimonial genre literature and Primo Levi’s works.

Marta Marín-Dòmine is currently the director of the El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria. A writer and researcher, she has been a professor at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada, where she has directed the Center for Memory and Testimony Studies. He has collaborated with research groups on memory and testimonial literature at the University of Barcelona and the Université Paris-Sorbonne, and his research on the testimony has led her to take a special interest in the work of Primo Levi.

Elisabetta Ruffini is the director of the Istituto Bergamasco per la storia della Resistenza e dell’età contemporània (Bergamos institute for the history of resistance and contemporary age) (Italy) and she will speak about Primo Levi as an essential “writer-non-writer” of Italian literature.

Miquel de Toro holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History and studies the collective memory of National Socialism and the development of memorials on Nazi crimes.

Joan-Carles Mèlich is a Philosophy of Education teacher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Marta Tafalla is an Ethics and Aesthetics Teacher at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, and she will reflect on Primo Levi’s works from a philosophical ethic perspective. Today, increasingly more philosophers are working with the idea that ethics must be constructed while bearing history in mind. This focus arose as a result of totalitarianism ideologies and genocides of the 20th century. Primo Levi’s work is crucial in rethinking this aspect of philosophy.

Vicenç Villatoro is a writer and Director of the Democratic Memorial. As a prologue writer for Levi’s works in Catalan, he will talk about the importance that the author has had in developing the perception of testimonial literature.

Marta Marín-Dòmine, Director of El Born CCM, moderates the discussion.

Domenico Scarpa will offer a panoramic view of the work that has been carried out in Italy over the last thirteen years, mostly in collaboration with the International Primo Levi Studies Centre in Turin: theatrical shows and cycles, stage readings, TV documentaries, exhibitions, CD-ROM editions and proposals for schools with the aim of furthering knowledge on Levi’s works with wide range of points of view.

Domenico Scarpa is author of essays, translator, expert on Primo Levi’s work.

Round-table discussion: “The reception of Primo Levi’s works”, with Pilar Beltran, Oriol Alcorta and Francesco Ardolino. Moderator: Isakun Arretxe
Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m.

Primo Levi. El testimoni, l’escriptor, el científic - El Born CCM

Pilar Beltran, Editor of Edicions 62, will talk about the history of the translation, publication and reception of Primo Levi’s works in Catalan as the person responsible for the translation of his works.

Oriol Alcorta, Editor of Edicions Península, will discuss the history of the translation, publication and reception of Primo Levi’s works in Spanish as  the person responsible for the translation of his works.

Francesco Ardolino is an Italian Philology teacher at the University of Barcelona, and he has studied the translations of Primo Levi’s works into Spanish and Catalan.

Izaskun Arretxe, Director of the Institució de les Lletres Catalanes (Catalan Literature Institute) moderates the discussion.
