The question “Why war?” has no singular response, none that will generate a broad consensus and much less one that is easy to understand. However, two thinkers of our time will approach the complex concept of war through poetry, reciting and explaining poems that talk about it and reflecting on it from a philosophical perspective.
LA BOIRA grisa dels trons de metralla
fa de la por una imatge que fuig
pels carrerons ensordits amb el pànic
sobre les brases de tanta innocència.
Heu parat taula amb els trossos de fam,
multiplicat el pa d’un evangeli
que mai no ha fet la cua amb la cartilla

Una paraula que ha romàs gravada
—perfectament llegible, substantiva—
damunt la fusta d’un passamà.
Així, una efígie del món romà:
l’encuny d’una moneda descolgada,
l’expressió d’un nom d’accent august.
O bé el lligall —espès de lletra— d’un escriba.
Sentim, de cop, l’esclat del temps (si Proust
alcés el cap!): el nom, que fa la cosa,
torna a sortir a la llum al cap de més
d’un segle d’haver estat sota la llosa
de tres mil metres d’aigua de mar fosca.
Lligall, moneda, nom: quanta memòria
que han fet incògnita un oblit d’arxiu,
tombes de terra i aigua… Si no fos que
havia de sorprendre’ns, vell de glòria,
allò que crèiem mort i ara és ben viu!
Suite “Endurance”, Un llum que crema, Jordi Llavina
Teresa Pascual (Grau de Gandia, 1952) is a Valencian poet, philosopher and translator. She made her name with the collection of poems Flexo (1988), winner of the Senyoriu d’Ausiàs March de Beniarjó Award, and to date she has published the compilations: Les hores (1988), winner of the Vicent Andrés Estellés award; Arena (1992); Curriculum Vitae (1996); El temps en ordre, which won the Sierra d’Or Critics Award (2002); Rebel·lió de la sal (2008), winner of the National Catalan Critics’ Prize for Poetry; Herències (2011), written with the poet Àngels Gregori, winner of the Manel Garcia Grau poetry award; València Nord (2014); Vertical (2019) winner of the Ausiàs March poetry award. Recently, she has published the bilingual Catalan-Spanish version Rebelión de la sal (2020) with translation and foreword by Lola Andrés; El temps en ordre. Poesia reunida 1988-2019. (2020) and Tot passa Baix (2022), Lletra d’Or Award (2023). She has been translated into several languages and her work is included in various anthologies.
Jordi Llavina (Gelida, 1968) has worked for many years as a journalist, but is currently teaching. In 2014, he was the curator of the Vinyoli Year. He has published more than twenty titles, mainly poetry. With Vetlla, he won the Vicent Andrés Estellés and the Critics’ awards. With Ermita, the Lletra d’Or Award. His last two books are Un llum que crema (Carles Riba 2022 award) and Proses de l’entreclaror.
